Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens Designed in the early 1960s by renowned Japanese landscape artist Dr. Tadashi Kubo, the gardens stand as a monument to the Japanese Canadians who endured the government enforced relocation of British Columbia’s Japanese Canadians in 1942. Somewhat larger than its Vancouver counterpart, the 4 acre gardens opened on July 3, 1966, with a grand opening on July 14, 1967. In attendance were Prince and Princess Takamatsu, the brother and sister in law of Japan’s Emperor Hirohito. The gardens feature a traditional Japanese house made of bamboo, a large Zen garden, paths, pond, streams, pagoda and more. Local vegetation has been chosen for its similarity to Japanese plants. Tours of the house are available, lead by guides dressed in traditional kimonos.
Open May through October. $5 adults, $4 seniors, $3 youth, free children under 5. Address: 9th Ave South at Mayor Magrath Dr Lethbridge AB T1J 3Z6
